MCKINNEY-VENTO HOMELESS EDUCATION ASSISTANCE IMPROVEMENT ACT
The Berwick Area School District recognizes its obligation to ensure that homeless students have access to the same
educational programs and services provided to other district students. The Board shall make reasonable efforts to identify
homeless children within the district, encourage their enrollment, and eliminate existing barriers to their attendance and
education, in compliance with federal and state law and regulations.
The Berwick Area School District may waive policies, procedures and administrative regulations that create barriers for enrollment,
attendance, transportation and success in school of homeless students, based on the recommendation of the Superintendent.
MCKINNEY VENTO HOMELESS DEFINITION
The term homeless children and youth encompasses;
- Individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence due to loss
- Children and youth who have a primary nighttime residence that is public or private but not designated for use
as regular sleeping accommodations for humans
- Children and youth who are living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, or similar settings.
All school districts must have a designee to assist homeless families and students. For further information on the McKinney-Vento Act and resources for implementation, please call the NHCE Help line at 800-308-2145 or visit their website listed below.
