Speech Services

The Berwick Area School District Speech and Language Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality services for our students by addressing their communication needs in order to facilitate educational and academic success as well as educating staff and parents on their supporting roles.
So, parents and guardians, what do you do if you have concerns regarding your child's communication development?

First, voice your concerns with your child's classroom teacher(s). They can discuss with you if they are observing these same concerns within the classroom setting. If your child's teacher also shares these concerns, they will contact the Speech Therapist assigned to their building for a consultation. Based on the consultation, it may lead to your child participating in a speech/language screening conducted during school hours. The results will be shared with both you and the teacher and the next steps will be discussed. These next steps could include:

  1. Development of a home-based program
  2. Implementation of classroom interventions by your child's teacher with guidance from the Speech Therapist
  3. Enrollment in a Speech Improvement Program called RTI/MTSS led by the Speech Therapist
  4. Referral for a Special Education Speech-Language Evaluation

No action is taken (with your child continuing to be monitored by the Multi-Disciplinary Team
