Berwick Girls’ Volleyball Team Having Historic Season

YATESVILLE – The Berwick Girls’ Volleyball team will enter the PIAA District 2 Class 3A tournament play, Thursday as the top seed in the competition. The Berwick girls’ will battle the winner of the Abington Heights-Tunkhannock match in the quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs currently own a 15-2 record with losses to perennial powers Holy Redeemer and Delaware Valley. Berwick defeated Redeemer earlier in the season, becoming just the second team in 12 years to defeat the Royals in a regular-season match. Holy Redeemer evened the score with Berwick Tuesday in the Wyoming Valley Conference Championship Match with a hard-fought four set (25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20) victory at Pittston Area High School.

The two teams tied with one regular season loss, necessitating the championship match. Coach Sarah Warner’s relatively inexperienced team has been one of the surprise programs in Pennsylvania this season. The success of this year’s team continues the resurgence of volleyball at Berwick over the last several years.

The Bulldogs’ Boys’ Volleyball Program was on the brink of elimination before the 2014-15 season. Warner took over at that point, and eventually led the team to a pair of state tournament appearances.
