Students pictured for Blue Ribbon Award WASHINGTON D.C. – United State Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos recently announced that Berwick Area High School has been recognized as a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School.  The National Blue Ribbon is the most prestigious recognition given to schools in the United States and is the first ever received by a school in the Berwick Area School District.

BAHS is one of four public high schools in Pennsylvania and 18 PA schools overall, to receive the honor.  There are 500 public school districts in Pennsylvania and several thousand schools were eligible for the National Blue Ribbon. Berwick joins West Chester East High School, Laurel High School in New Castle and Greenville High School of the Erie area as recipients of the 2017 High School award. Donald Eichorn Middle School in Lewisburg was the only other regional school honored.

Secretary DeVos announced that 292 schools were chosen nationwide, with nearly three-quarters of those being elementary schools.

Berwick is being honored for closing the achievement gap at an exemplary level. The National Blue Ribbon is the culmination of five years of progress in moving the entire student body forward through increased rigor, remediation for struggling students and an emphasis on bolstering the Advanced Placement and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum.

The district has increased the number of students taking and succeeding in Advanced Placement programs significantly over the last five years. BAHS has been recognized in 2012 and 2014 by the College Board for its increase in the number of students who take Advanced Placement courses and the number who score a 3 or better on the National AP Exam. Scoring a 3 on the exam is the standard established by many colleges and universities for the receipt of college credit. Berwick is the only high school in Columbia or Luzerne County to be recognized twice since the inception of the award in 2012.

Berwick Area High School has also seen many of its’ students receive college credit while in high school as a result of their participation in Dual Enrollment and STEM Magnet programs at Bloomsburg University and through a Dual Enrollment agreement with Luzerne County Community College. In its’ most recent school profile, Berwick was listed as having 77% of its students go on to post-secondary education.
