BERWICK – The Berwick Area Middle School Math Counts team placed 1st out of 18 schools in the Keystone Northeast Chapter Competition, held recently.
Our local team defeated such schools as Wyoming Seminary and MMI Prep to take the title. Berwick has now won the title two straight years and is only the third public school to win the title in the last decade. The team is coached by High School Math Teacher Kristi Kerbacher and Gifted Education Teacher Todd Gunther.
Team members are as follows: Emily Getty, Maryanna Betterly, Amelia Martinez, Alex Hacker, Jordan Kopac, Logan Witner, Matthew Ebert, Jackson Dacier, Clara Fish and Regan Welch.
Maryanna Betterly also finished as the Champion of both the Written Contest and the Countdown Round. Emily Getty finished sixth of more than 150 competitors in the Countdown Round and Emily and Maryanna were the only two girls in the competition that qualified in the Top 10 of the Countdown Round this year.
Emily is now the fourth Berwick Area girl to participate in the Countdown Round Top 10 in the last two years. Maryanna qualified for the Countdown Round Top 10 last year as a 7th grade student.
All of the Berwick students finished in the top half of the individual competitions. Team Round participants Jordan Kopac, Emily Getty, Maryanna Betterly and Alex Hacker will represent Northeastern Pennsylvania at the State Math Counts Competition on March 10th and 11th.
