Accelerated Reader

The Berwick Area Middle School has an Accelerated Reader program that encourages students to read a variety of books, and then to receive points based on demonstrating an understanding of the text. The program supports the reading curriculum at this level by giving students additional reading opportunities.

Overview:

• The newest version of Accelerated Reader can do even more to help teachers accelerate reading growth for all their students, from emergent readers to college prep.

• Accelerated Reader helps teachers focus attention on careful reading of books, which improves students' critical-thinking skills and builds the intrinsic love of reading.
  
  
• Provides teachers with reliable, objective information.
  • Three different types of assessment give teachers valuable data on students' reading practice, literacy skills development, and performance on classroom assignments.
    
    
• Teachers who use Accelerated Reader report higher attendance, fewer discipline problems, and improved attitudes toward school.
  
  
• Helps teachers keep each student challenged.
  • Using Accelerated Reader, teachers can continually match kids to appropriate books within their zone of proximal development (ZPD). That means teachers can ensure every student is challenged without being frustrated

How it works:

• Student reads a book.
  • Students choose their own books and read them at their own pace.
    
    
• Student takes a quiz on the computer.

• Student and teacher get Information
• Both the student and teacher get immediate, individualized constructive feedback to direct ongoing reading practice.
