Message from Miss Peifer, ESL Coordinator |
ESL (English as a Second Language) is a program for students whose native language is something other than English. The students are given a test to determine their level of English proficiency. When results show a deficiency in the area of reading/writing, speaking, or listening, they are put into the ESL program. Elementary and middle school students are pulled-out of the regular classroom to receive English instruction, while high school students are scheduled to receive ESL during a study hall period. The students are not exited from the ESL Program until they test fluent in each of the above listed categories. The ESL teacher meets with students' regular classroom teachers to discuss the best way to meet the child's needs. One of the Program goals is to help students increase English proficiency to enable students to function at the level of their native English-speaking peers. |
